Our speaker says:
"I guarantee the open source crowd will find this interesting and provocative."
A decision in the Bilski v. Kappos case is expected by the U.S. Supreme Court by June
2010. Recent rumors are that a decision will issue very soon, perhaps before this talk.
When the decision is handed down, it will likely affect not only the patentability of socalled
"pure" business methods, but also any process-oriented patents: computer
software, computer-implemented inventions, medical and diagnostic methods,
agricultural methods, financial services processes and systems, etc.
The case thus has potential to be disruptive to the notion of patent protection for more
than just business methods.
